First day of my 30 day challenge doing one LYO class video each day, and I have to say I am already feeling like I have taken on a big commitment! Â I know that the lovely LYO members are with me, maybe in the practice challenge, or if not definitely in making sure I am sticking to my word and doing it everyday! Â Each day I’ll post on the blog and let you know how I’m getting on.
I chose this video for my first day because my husband injured his back surfing just yesterday and I must admit that one of my first thoughts was, that might not have happened if he had done more stretching and strengthening specific to those muscles used in the water. Â So I am on a mission to give him some tips and hints about how to stretch specifically for surfing – enter Georgie as surfer herself and her boyfriend is a surf instructor – perfect!
The video is perfect for surfers who are new to yoga, or anyone who is new to yoga and likes to look at the ocean while practicing! Â The setting is stunning and the movements are very well explained, with modifications given. Â Georgie has a lovely steady timing through the class and I always find as a yoga teacher myself it is so helpful to do other people’s classes to continue learning. Â For example I picked up a new concise and clear way of explaining alignment in downward dog as well as a reminder that fast and furious is not always the best way, not to shy away from a very methodical pace and approach.
The class challenged my usual busy, busy self to be in the space between the instructions and changing from one pose to the next. Â It took a lot of mental determination to continue and stay with the whole practice even though I have lots of other things my mind thinks I could/ should be doing. Â Especially the pranayama at the end of the practice, always a test for my Type A personality to sit and work with the breath, feels so wonderful afterwards though! Â The continual challenge of putting what you know nourishes you above all else and at the top of the priority list, even though there are many other seemingly urgent and important tasks waiting to be done, is a lesson I learn again and again!
Thank you Georgie for a grounded start to my challenge – if you are joining me in the challenge, or just trying a new video for the first time, please let me know how you get on – it makes it so much more fun to do it together!
Love Gemma xxx
